Ravens are extraordinary creatures. Unusually intelligent and deeply curious birds, they are able to solve complex problems and make complex decisions, evidence of their rich cognitive awareness. They are thought to be the only other animal besides humans to possess the capacity to communicate about objects or events that are distant in space or time. Despite their unfounded associations with death and the macabre, Ravens are actually highly social, are know to bring each other (and even humans) gifts, and mate for life. One way to tell Ravens apart from crows, other than their much larger size, is that they are seen mostly in pairs as opposed to flocks. You will see them soaring on thermals similar to hawks rather than flapping, and the tail has a distinctive wedge shape when in flight. They also have long, thick throat feathers. The call is the most easily discernible difference—crows emit a higher pitched cawing sound, while Ravens employ a lower and wider range of croaks, and can even be taught to speak. Because of all of these remarkable traits, Raven as a totem is associated with magic and connection to the spirit world, and can symbolize an exceptional level of intelligence.
