Cheetah is a large cat native to Africa, perfectly adapted to its hot, arid forests and savannas. Widely known as the fastest animal on land, Cheetah pursues her prey at speeds around 40mph, but can accelerate within seconds to 70mph over short distances! The word Cheetah comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'adorned' or 'painted' due to Cheetah's nearly 2,000 black spots. Their other unique marking is the distinctive 'tear streak' that runs from the inner eye around to the mouth. Cheetahs spend most of their time hunting or remaining extremely vigilant against larger predators that may harm their young or steal the prey they expended so much precious energy catching. Cheetah as a totem symbolizes the ability to focus intently on a goal and achieve it with speed and agility. It is also associated with vigilance and protection, and its unique markings can be linked to self-expression. Cheetahs are listed as vulnerable, with only about 7,000 left in the wild, due to habitat loss and poaching for the illegal pet trade. You can help by supporting organizations like the Cheetah Conservation Fund.
